Video Casette Recycling

VHS Furniture

Most materials are recyclable, but videos are a hard one to dispose of properly. In theory some of the parts are recyclable but they need to be screwed apart and separated which is very labour intensive for materials with no real value.

Do you still have a lot of VHS cassettes that you don’t know what to do with?

Well here is some inspiration.

You will need;

  • VHS cassettes
  • Small Philips screwdriver
  • Contact Adhestive
  • A flat surface

Figure out what you want to make and how many tapes you will need by experimenting with various shapes.

Unscrew the cassettes and take the tapes wheels out from the inside. This will make them a bit lighter as the more tapes you glue together the heavier they will be.

Screw them back together. (I used only 2-3 screws for this)

Lay your design on a flat surface

Spread a thin layer of contact adhesive on each surface you want to glue to each other. Do this one by one as you don’t want the glue to dry.  Don’t wipe off any excess. Let it dry and peel it off later.

You might need to wait for the table top to dry fully before attaching legs etc. This might take 12 hrs to set properly. Make sure its not sticking to your surface either.

Good luck!

7″ Vinyl Fascinators

Here are the latest collection of our upcycled vinyl fascinators.

Modeled by the lovely Sharon. All available apart for the egg. I’m keeping that one for myself!

Summer Collection

Ethnic Prints and Folky Fabrics.

For the summer I wanted to create a collection that was vibrant and casual but using some more traditional fabrics. The lovely Chloe is my model and the award winning Naomi from Namnam’s did the face painting.

South American Cloth.

This was a table runner that became this easy fit dress.

African Print.

This lovely piece of fabric was used as a curtain by my ex housemate Rebecca. When she moved out I re-purposed it into an A-line dress. Apparently the print is for a women’s vote  campaign.

Baggy Trousers.

This fabric was salvaged from a pair of trousers that I unpicked. I love the vibrant colours of this print.

Indian Embroidery.

This piece of cloth just came to me, like most bits of fabric do. Not sure if it used to be anything in a previous life.  There was just enough to make this cheeky number out of it.

Bed Cover.

This was an Indian cotton bed throw that I cut in half and made two dresses from. Boned for extra support.

Upcycled Steamer Earrings

Hot and Steamy!

Brighton and Hove residents can recycle their old metal pots and pans with Magpie Recycling, or drop them off at Shabitat. Sometimes the odd broken vegetable steamer end up there too. If one or two of the “leaves” are missing it can’t be resold so I tried to think of any other ways they could be reused.

Necklace to come!

I do have more of these, so get in touch if you want a pair.

What Coco Said

Why follow trends? They are only made up for you to shop more. Break the cycle! Take a pledge, buy secondhand or upcycled only for a year. (Ok underwear is allowed). But other than that we probably don’t really need to top up our wardrobe.  Organise a clothes swap, or have some retail therapy in a charity shop if you really have to. Join one of our classes and learn how to customise.  The devil is in the detail, so dig out all your old scarves hats and necklaces and get accessorising.

Who wants to look like everyone else anyway. Like Coco Chanel said; “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different”
